Bagshot BusinessesThere is no single large employer or dominant industry in the area. There are a range of small businesses in the village, though most residents are employed outside of Bagshot, typically within a radius of 15 miles (25 km), a few commute to London. A foot survey of the village produced the surprising result that over 150 businesses could be identified, and there are undoubtably more that were missed. Historically Bagshot's livelihood derived from the Coaching trade, and today we still have a remarkably large number of public houses and eating establishments. When coaching declined, horticulture developed with market gardens and nurseries - very much aided by the railway providing convenient transport into London - ironic given that it had been the railways that killed off the coaching trade! Though Waterer's, which had been the village's dominant nursery business, has closed we still have several nurseries and garden centres in the vicinity. The High Street supports a wide range of small retail outlets and consumer services, and one supermarket. Office developments house a diverse collection of businesses, and there are quite a few small light industrial units hidden away in unexpected corners.
